Grees (/grees / [Translation Unavailable]) is a subtropical Town located in Kemembakēàg County, Dāmêvr Kingdom, within the Sylvanian Empire.

The name Grees is derived from the Sylvin language, as Grees was founded by Tshënkê Wrobleski, who was culturaly Sylvin.

Climate

Grees has a yearly average temperature of 14°C (57°F), with its average temperature during the summer being a cool 16°C (60°F) and its average temperature during the winter being a cool 12°C (53°F). Grees receives an average of 255 cm/y (100 in/y) of precipitation, most of which comes in the form of snow during the pleasantly short winter months. Grees covers an area of nearly 6 km2 (2 mi2), and an average elevation of 408 m (1338 ft) above sea level.

Overview

Grees was founded in time immemorial, reportedly some time durring the late 7th century, by Tshënkê Wrobleski. The establishment of Grees was plagued by a lack of willing colonists. After attempts to pay people to resettle failed Tshënkê Wrobleski struck deals with nearby nations and communities to establish Grees as a prison colony.

Grees was built using the conventions of Sylvin durring the late 7th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Grees is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature plaster covered brickwork used to form structures with an emphasis on symmetry, proportion, geometry and the regularity of parts. Orderly arrangements of columns, pilasters and lintels, as well as the use of semicircular arches, hemispherical domes, niches and aediculae can be found everywhere such that only size of building and yard can be used to measure the general prosparity of a given building's owners due to a general wealthy feeling the style gives off.

Grees is buildings are speckled and packed arround narrow paverstone streets with seemingly no patern to them. It appears as if the town's residents simply built streets as they pleased and squeazed buildings in wherever and howeave rpossible, creating an organic, frustrating to navigate, maze of a town. The town is protected by a renforced stone fence which sits atop earthwork defences, for some of the best inexpencive defences a town of Grees 's size could have. Grees 's well-designed, yet cheep are in an unremarkable state. To some, this is the ideal sate for defences to be in. In need of absoutly nothing, and ready to serve the town as needed.

A look around Grees seems to be home to a quite vibrant and boisterous community. Everywhere one looks they can see people going out their daily business with a smile and a spring in their step. Children play loudly in the streets, causing untold havoc as youth are want and allowed to do. On second glance, that chaos continues into adulthood. People seem to be allowed to do as they please with little harmoney to anything. It feels less like a town, and more like a spot people just happened to place their homes. Yet there are small elements here and there which show the underlying structure of the community. It’s just so complex, organic, and flowing one can only understand what is a piece of the puzzle, but not what its neighbors are.

Civic Infrastructure

Grees has an animal control department which works to enforce local ordinances relating to the control, impoundment, and disposition of animals.

Grees has an Office of Civil Groundskeeping, which works to enforce local ordinances relating to the construction and upkeep up of all plant life, water features, and other natural decorations within Grees . They are also responsible for the maintenance of these features. Notably, the OCG is not responsible for Grees 's parks.

Grees has an Office of Civil Vicary, which is responsible for providing a livelyhood for all officialy recognised religious figures within Grees .

Grees has a Gravedigger's Guild, which is responsible for collecting the dead and laying them to rest according to all applicable laws and religious customs.

Grees has a Department of Firefighters, which is responsible for organizing fire fighting efforts during a fire and enforcing local ordinances relating to fire safety.

Grees has a Highwayman's Guild, which is tasked with maintaining the roads and highways leading into town as well as keeping them safe for travelers.

Grees has a monistary of an order of Civil Monks, who provide divine-related services to the general public and maintain Grees 's public wards, blessings, and other arcane systems.

Grees has a Parks and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the construction, management, and usage rights for all of its parks and parklands. They are not to be confused with the Office of Civil Groundskeeping as they do not hold authority over nor responsibility for Grees 's natural decorations nor waterways.

Grees has a public schooling program overseen by the Hall of Sages who has the responsibility of ensuring access to affordable high-quality education in all basic classes (Reading, Writing, Mathmatics, General Sciences, General Arcana, and Social Education) is made available to all citizens.

Grees has a public septic system, which allows its citizens to have indoor bathrooms. The septic system is overseen by the League of Sewerkeepers, who posses the legal authority to enforce all laws relating to the septic system, and are also tasked with its maintenance and upkeep.

Cultural Notes

Grees 's chapel was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is inspired by the natural world, characterized by sinuous, sculptural, organic shapes, arches, curving lines, and sensual ornamentation. Common motifs included stylized versions of leaves, flowers, vines, insects, animals, and other natural elements. Decorative elements found on the inside and outside of buildings include intricate mosaic work, curved windows, and decorative trim work. .

In Grees tiny harmless tornadoes plague the town.

The Carrion Moth near Grees are known to be almost tame, such that they can be put to domestic use.

Grees 's citizens partake in a curious ritual relating to their local kami. It takes place in autumn and involves drinking to channel Necromancy energies of tier 2 via recitation of poetic epics.

A great magical Working has been a critical part of Grees since its creation, but now it's beginning to decay. It may function only intermittently, now, or its effects may have curdled into something double-edged. The locals have no idea how to fix it, and indeed, it may not be possible to repair it with modern science or sorcery.

Grees 's is something of a geological and arcane anomaly, as neither physical nor magical law entirely explains its formation.

History

In time immemorial, reportedly some time during the early 2nd century, Grees was attacked by soldiers from another nation, waging a greater campaign. The details of the conflict are hazy at best due to many conflicting accounts. What is known is Grees lost 259 people, 135 livestock, and 78 buildings. The conflict ended after roughly 96, when members of Grees 's militia enacted an operation to assassinate an enemy hero. The operation was complicated by the officer in charge of Grees 's forces was incompetent, and issue many foolish and-or unprofessional orders. The conflict ended with the defense of the prison against a siege, which ended in defeat for Grees 's forces. The war is remembered in legend by Grees 's bards, historians, and legend keepers.
